3 ways to bring spring into your home

Without the risk of sounding like a broken record, I think it’s so impactful on your mental well-being and happiness to signify the changes to the seasons in your home. Be it with a larger decor update, like paint or a new/up-cycled piece of furniture, or with a simple floral display. I always feel a sense of lightness, particularly in the spring, which is something I want to recognise in my home. Here are 3 very easy ways to bring spring to your home.

  1. Bring ‘spring’ foliage into your home

I love bringing real foliage into my home, and so a good place to start would be looking at your garden or nearby open spaces, and foraging (if you’re allowed to do so) a couple of stems or branches for your home. You can often source very good seasonal stems from florists, too. Otherwise, faux stems are a great alternative if you’re looking for something long lasting, easy-to-store, that you can bring out year after year. I believe (and do think that some research has been done to prove this), that the actually visual of having foliage in your home is more physically and mentally beneficial than it needing to be ‘real’. Typically, I’d say anything green is good for spring, but, if you check this journal entry I’ve written, I’ve linked specific faux stems that I think work incredibly well for the warmer months.

  2. Swap out the fabrics

I actually keep a lot of the soft furnishings in our cottage on a ‘rotation’, meaning that certain pieces come out for the cooler months and others in warmer times. In spring I like to have less ‘stuff’ and clutter around the house, and so usually put away some of the thicker wool throws and cushions from winter. I also prefer to have a more neutral, minimal look for spring and summer, so swap a lot of heavily patterned or deep coloured soft furnishings for light, neutral linens and cottons. It helps bring a sense of freshness and newness to the home. I also find this to be a really good opportunity to wash, dry clean or spritz all of the soft furnishings in our home, and find the art or re-organising quite therapeutic and rejuvenating in itself. I’d suggest keeping a big hamper or basket filled with all of your ‘seasonal soft furnishings’, and then spending a day or two swapping them out each season, washing the ones to go away, and deciding if you still love everything - and if not, you can re-home a few pieces - which feels like a good job in itself.

  3. Freshen up the fragrance

Scent is probably the best way to affordably mark the changing season. If you ask someone what reminds them of Christmas, the scent of a tree, favourite drink, meal or candle, will likely be one of their top memory-evokers. Why can’t it be the same for spring?! Think about what reminds you of spring. Whether it’s something from your childhood, a flower, a cocktail, and then think about the ways you can mimic that in your home. Essential oils in electric diffusers are a great way of doing this, and you can almost find any scent in oil format. Candles and room sprays are also a great way to bring the feeling of freshness into your home.
